Is Cialis Over the Counter?
First approved by the FDA in 2003, Cialis®, which contains the active ingredient tadalafil, is one of the most popular medications available for treating erectile dysfunction, or ED.
Cialis is a long-acting medication. Unlike Viagra®, which usually provides relief from ED for four hours per dose, a single dose of Cialis can improve erectile function and prevent ED for as long as 36 hours.
Like other ED medications, Cialis isn’t available over the counter. However, if you have erectile dysfunction, getting a prescription for Cialis, Viagra or other ED medications is a relatively easy process.
Below, we’ve explained how you can get a prescription for Cialis, either from your primary care provider or through an online consultation for ED.
We’ve also looked at several over-the-counter alternatives to Cialis and explained why they’re almost never worth considering as erectile dysfunction drugs.
What is Cialis?
Cialis is an erectile dysfunction drug. It belongs to a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors, which work by inhibiting the effects of an enzyme that regulates blood flow to some areas of the body, including the erectile tissue in your penis.
Cialis is a long-lasting medication that can provide relief from ED for one to two days. It’s often referred to as the “weekend” pill for treating erectile dysfunction.
Cialis can be taken as needed before sexual activity to treat ED, or on a daily basis. When it’s used on an as-needed basis, Cialis should be used approximately one hour before the start of sexual activity.
As a PDE5 inhibitor, Cialis works only by improving blood flow. It does not have any effects on sexual desire.
The active ingredient in Cialis, tadalafil, is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (a form of high blood pressure in the lungs) under the brand name Adcirca. Tadalafil is also used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostate).
Can You Buy Cialis Over the Counter?
Cialis is one of several popular oral medications for treating erectile dysfunction. Others include Viagra, Levitra® and Stendra®.
Currently, Cialis is not sold over the counter. Although some countries allow the sale of erectile dysfunction drugs over the counter, ED medications such as Cialis, Viagra, Levitra and Stendra can only be purchased with a valid prescription in the United States.
Over the years, there have been efforts to make Cialis and other medications used in treatment for erectile dysfunction available over the counter.
Cialis was originally developed by Eli Lilly and Company. In 2014, Eli Lilly and Sanofi Consumer Healthcare, a part of the French drug maker Sanofi, announced a deal to seek legal approval to sell CIalis as an over-the-counter, nonprescription medication.
Unfortunately, the proposal faced significant hurdles while pursuing regulatory approval and the medication hasn’t yet been able to make the switch from prescription only to over the counter.
The good news is that while Cialis isn’t available over the counter just yet, getting a prescription for ED medication isn’t difficult, nor does it require a time-consuming or potentially embarrassing visit to your primary care provider.

How to Get a Cialis Prescription
Because Cialis is a prescription medication, you’ll need to talk to a healthcare provider and get a valid prescription before you can purchase and use it.
While getting a prescription for Cialis may seem difficult, it’s almost always a straightforward and simple process.
Cialis and other medications for ED are prescribed to millions of men of all ages in the United States, and if you have ED, it’s likely that you’ll be able to receive a prescription.
Like with Viagra and other ED treatments, there are several ways to receive a Cialis prescription if you have erectile dysfunction or other sexual performance issues.
Visit Your Primary Care Provider
If you have erectile dysfunction, your primary care provider will usually be able to prescribe you Cialis as one of several treatment options.
You can start this process by booking an appointment with your primary care provider. Be frank and honest with your healthcare provider and discuss your ED symptoms. If they think you’re a good candidate for Cialis, they’ll usually be happy to write you a prescription.
Since talking about your sex life isn’t always the most comfortable experience, this method has its downsides, especially if you’ve been going to the same healthcare provider for several years and have a friendly, easygoing relationship.
To make discussing erectile dysfunction more comfortable, try to remember that your healthcare provider is a professional, and that there’s almost a zero percent chance that you’re the first and only person to talk to them about ED.
They’ve likely helped hundreds of men with ED before, as well as many other people with health or sex-related issues much more embarrassing or concerning than yours.
Luckily, if you’d prefer not to talk about ED with your healthcare provider, there are other ways to get a Cialis prescription.
Meet With a Urologist
Urologists are doctors that specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the urinary system, as well as conditions that involve the reproductive organs.
Many urologists specialize in treating ED. If you feel uncomfortable meeting with your primary care physician to discuss your sex life, or if you’d like to talk to an expert, talking to a urologist might be an option worth considering.
Like your primary care provider, a urologist can write a valid prescription for Cialis or other ED medication.
Have an Online Medical Consultation
If you don’t want to talk about your sex life with your healthcare provider, or you just prefer the convenience of doing things from home, you can also get a Cialis prescription online.
We offer tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis) as a convenient monthly subscription, letting you access the ED medication you need for a satisfying sex life without having to discuss ED with your primary care provider or make any trips to your local pharmacy.
Using our telehealth service, you can take part in a consultation with a licensed provider online and find out about your options for treating ED. If appropriate, you’ll receive a valid prescription for Cialis or other ED medication online.

Am I Too Young for a Cialis Prescription?
For the most part, erectile dysfunction is a condition that’s mostly associated with middle-aged and older men.
Like many other perceptions of men’s sexual health issues, this one isn’t totally accurate. While ED does become more common with age, the reality is that men of all ages can face difficulties with getting and maintaining an erection.
According to the Cleveland Clinic Center for Continuing Education, about 40 percent of men will face issues related to erectile dysfunction by the age of forty.
Erectile dysfunction and other sexual performance issues are also common in younger men — a problem that’s often described as porn-induced ED.
If you’re currently in your 20s or 30s and have erectile dysfunction, performance anxiety or other issues that affect your sexual performance, you shouldn’t feel ashamed or that you’re too young to use medication like Cialis.
Cialis is as safe for younger men as it is for men in their 40s, 50s, 60s or older, meaning there’s no reason not to consider it as a treatment if you have ED.
Cialis Safety and Side Effects
When it’s used as prescribed, Cialis is a safe and effective medication for most men. However, like other medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, Cialis does have the potential to cause some side effects.
- Headache
- Dyspepsia (indigestion)
- Back pain
- Myalgia (muscle pain)
- Nasal congestion
- Facial flushing
- Pain in the limbs
Although uncommon, Cialis and other ED medications can potentially cause more severe side effects, such as abnormal vision (color vision or blurred vision), chest pain, ringing that affects the ears, hives, rash and other issues. If you experience any of these you need to seek immediate medical attention.
Our guide to Cialis side effects goes into more detail about the adverse effects that may occur with Cialis or generic tadalafil. It’s important to contact your healthcare provider for help if you develop severe or persistent side effects while using Cialis to treat ED.
OTC Cialis Substitutes and Sellers
Like Viagra, Cialis has a well-deserved reputation as a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Because of this reputation and popularity, there are plenty of over-the-counter “Cialis substitutes” available online, as well as in convenience stores, sex stores and gas stations.
These products usually fit into one of two categories. The first are herbal over-the-counter Cialis substitutes that contain ingredients like L-arginine and ginseng.
There’s limited evidence that these ingredients have any significant positive impact on erections or sexual performance, and none are approved by the FDA.
And let us be clear: you can’t get Cialis over the counter, and these herbal remedies are unlikely to offer much in the way of benefits. On the whole, these products aren’t effective as treatments for erectile dysfunction, and none of them are Cialis substitutes.
The second category of products claim to be safe, “100 percent natural” over-the-counter Cialis or Viagra substitutes.
These products often contain hidden, undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients, such as sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis) and others.
Many of these products are made in unlicensed facilities, many of which lack the trained staff or precise equipment of a legitimate pharmaceutical lab. They often contain active ingredients that are dosed in excessive amounts, making them potentially dangerous.
What’s especially concerning is that these over-the-counter products rarely identify their active ingredients, meaning they can be particularly dangerous if you have heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, or if you use medications such as nitrates to treat angina or heart failure.
Some of these tainted Cialis knock-off supplements contain multiple ingredients, meaning you may end up taking more than one ED drug without realizing it.
The FDA maintains a database of these tainted products online, with information on the hidden ingredients found in many “safe” and “natural” over-the-counter ED pills.
As you’ve probably guessed, these over-the-counter Cialis substitutes are best avoided. While there might be some sexual benefits to supplements like ginseng and L-arginine, the massive number of spiked, dangerous products in this category make it a minefield for customers.
Instead, if you need to treat ED and improve your sexual performance, stick to FDA-approved medications such as Cialis (tadalafil), Viagra (sildenafil) and Stendra (avanafil).

Cialis
Cialis is a PDE5 inhibitor, a drug designed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a selective inhibitor of cyclic monosphosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5. Cialis was approved by the FDA in 2011. It’s generic name is Tadalafil and is recommended as an “as needed” medication. It is among the five FDA approved drugs that can be prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. Cialis begins working within 15-30 minutes after it is taken, and its effects can last up to 36 hours.
How does Cialis work?
Cialis works by increasing blood flow to certain parts of the body. The drug stops an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5, which results in more cGMP, increasing the chances for an erection. Cialis relaxes and opens up blood arteries to increase the blood flow.
Unlike other drugs prescribed for erectile dysfunction, Cialis works in combination with sexual stimulation. Nitric oxide is released from nerve endings, which helps in arterial relaxation. Without sexual stimulation, the release of nitric oxide will be hampered and may deter the effects of Cialis. This means there is a low chance of the user experiencing an unwanted erection.
Who should take Cialis?
In addition to those with ED, the drug can also be used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia – BPH). BPH can cause difficulty in urinating. The drug can help smooth muscles in the bladder and prostate.
How to take Cialis?
Cialis is a prescribed medication. It is available at local pharmacies in the form of tablets. Your doctor will prescribe the medication depending on your requirement. Cialis is available in the following strengths:
Cialis is taken orally. The dosage can be increased or decreased depending on the individual’s sustenance towards the drug and its effects.
What precautions should I take before using Cialis?
Before taking the medication, inform your doctor about any allergies you may have. Cialis entails different ingredients (inactive) which could cause allergic reactions. You must also tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have. This can include heart diseases, irregular heartbeat, angina pains, kidney disease, high/low blood pressure, peyronie’s disease, priapism, eye problems, stomach ulcers, and bleeding disorders.
Some medications may lead to unwanted side effects when taken with Cialis. Taking any nitrate medication with Cialis may cause dangerously low blood pressure.
What are the side effects of Cialis?
While taking Cialis, you may experience the following side effects:
- Pain in the arms, back, and jaw
- Chest pains
- Chills and cold sweats
- Blurred vision
- Tightness in the chest
- Dizziness and confusion
- Fainting and lightheadedness
- Irregular heartbeat
- Headache
- Nausea
- Hearing loss
- Shortness of breath
- Sweating
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Painful and prolonged erection
If any of these side effects persist, call your doctor immediately.
You can get Cialis at your local or online pharmacy. HealthWarehouse.com is a reputable name that stocks Cialis in all strengths.

More Information
What is Cialis?
Cialis is a prescription-only medication for erectile dysfunction, and contains the active ingredient tadalafil. It can be a good alternative to treatments like Viagra because it has a longer-lasting effect (up to 36 hours). There are two types of Cialis:
- Cialis – which is available in a 10mg or 20mg strength, and is taken just before you are going to have sex.
- Cialis Daily – A lower dose of Cialis, available in a 2.5mg or 5mg strength, which is taken every day. This can be a better option for people who have frequent or spontaneous sex.
Can I buy Cialis online?
To get a prescription for Cialis from us, you will need to provide information via an easy online questionnaire. One of our doctors will review your details and issue a prescription, provided Cialis is safe and appropriate for you to use. You can use your prescription to buy Cialis at a pharmacy of your choice. If, for any reason, Cialis is unsuitable for you then you will be refunded. Sometimes the doctors may ask you to provide additional information before they can safely prescribe the medication.
Do not buy Cialis online without a prescription. Any website that claims to sell Cialis without a prescription is not only illegal, but putting your health at risk for profit. There is no legitimate way to buy Cialis without a prescription, nor is it safe to do so.
How Cialis works
Cialis works in a similar way to other erectile dysfunction treatments. It relaxes muscles around your penis, improving blood flow and making it easier to get and keep erections when you’re aroused.
- starts working in about 30 mins
- lasts for up to 36 hours
- might not work as well if you drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal beforehand
If you take Cialis Daily, you do not need to plan to take it before sex. Cialis Daily is always working, and helps you get an erection whenever you’re ready to have sex.
How to take Cialis
Taking Cialis is easy, just like any other tablet you swallow:
- For Cialis 10mg and 20mg – take your tablet 1 hour before you want to have sex, and avoid heavy meals before you take it
- For Cialis Daily – take your tablet at the same time every day
- Swallow your tablet whole, with water if needed
- Don’t take more than 1 tablet every 24 hours
- Avoid drinking alcohol to get the best results and less risk of side effects
What are the dosages of Cialis?
There are 4 dosages of Cialis. 2 daily doses and 2 doses taken before sex. Daily doses can be a better choice if you have sex on more than 3 different days a week.
- The lower-strength daily dose
- You can try this dose if you’ve tried 5mg and it worked well but it gives you some mild side effects
- Daily doses
Make sure to check with a doctor before switching the dose of any medication.
Reviews of Cialis
- Cialis works for 60-70% of people who try it
- Cialis has a rating of 8.7 out of 10 for erectile dysfunction treatment according to user reviews on drugs.com
- On average, patients who used Superdrug Online Doctor to order Cialis treatment rate it 4.6 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.com
Cialis Safety Information
Cialis can cause some side effects and it may react with other medication you’re taking. For full safety information, please read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication – Cialis taken before sex PIL, Cialis Daily PIL.
Cialis side effects
Less than 2% of people appear to get side effects when taking Cialis 10mg. If you think you’re having side effects, talk to your regular doctor.
Uncommon side effects of Cialis are:
- increased heart rate
- changes in blood pressure
- blood in the urine
- ringing in the ears
- palpitations
- erection that won’t go away (priapism)
- blurred vision
- eye pains
- increased sweating
- difficulty breathing
- nose bleeds
- dizziness
- nausea, being sick or abdominal pain
- a rash
- chest pain
- tiredness
If you suffer from severe side effects such as:
you should always see a doctor immediately and stop taking Cialis.
If your side effects become serious and/or are impacting your life too much for you to want to continue taking Cialis, then you should stop taking it and discuss it with your doctor.
You shouldn’t just adjust or switch your treatment without medical advice as everyone’s body reacts slightly differently to medications.
Drug interactions
You may not be able to take Cialis if you’re taking some types of medications, since they might react, including:
- nitrates, e.g. isosorbide mononitrate, glyceryl trinitrate
- some antibiotics, e.g. erythromycin
- antifungals, e.g. ketoconazole and itraconazole
- antivirals, e.g. ritonavir and saquinavir
- alpha-blockers, e.g. tamsulosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin
- other erectile dysfunction medications, e.g. Viagra, Levitra etc
Alcohol and grapefruit juice can react with your medication too.
Pre-existing conditions
You may not be able to take Cialis if you have:
- Peyronie’s disease (a condition that causes the penis to curve)
- heart problems or have had a stroke
- certain visual/ eye conditions
- kidney or liver disease
- sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma or leukaemia
How much does Cialis cost without insurance?
Viagra is one of the most well-known, popular drug names. But did you know it’s not the only medication that treats erectile dysfunction? As many as 30 million men experience ED, and many of them use Cialis. However, treating erectile dysfunction isn’t cheap. Maintaining a healthy sex life with Cialis can add up. To help ease the burden, learn how much Cialis costs without insurance, and how you can save on your Cialis prescription.
What is Cialis?
Cialis ( tadalafil ) is a medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction, the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Like other popular ED drugs including Viagra (sildenafil) and Levitra (vardenafil) , Cialis belongs to a group of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5 inhibitors or PDE5i). They work, along with sexual stimulation, by relaxing specific muscles in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow that results in an erection.
Some people may use Cialis (What is Cialis?) to treat conditions other than erectile dysfunction. “Cialis is used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction (ED), pulmonary arterial hypertension, and secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon,” explains Michael J. Brown, RPh, BCPS, BCPP, a clinical pharmacist and owner of Sunshine Nutraceuticals .
Cialis is an oral tablet that may be prescribed for daily use or just as needed. If taken daily, the dosage typically starts at 2.5 mg taken at the same time each day, transitioning to maintenance dosages of 2.5 mg to 5 mg daily. Or, more commonly, when it’s taken as needed before sexual activity, the dose can vary from 5 mg to 20 mg, and should not be used more than once per day.

Side effects
Side effects of Cialis are rare, but can include:
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Loss of vision or loss of hearing/ringing in the ears (This is a rare, but serious side effect—seek immediate medical attention!)
For a full list of potential side effects, speak with your doctor.
How much does Cialis cost without insurance?
A 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that between 2012 and 2017, the price of Cialis more than doubled. In fact, it increased 187% from $127 per month (30 tablet supply) to $365. Depending on the dosage—it can vary from 2.5 mg to 20 mg—the cost of Cialis can go beyond $1341.
In many cases, health insurance and Medicare Part D prescription plans do not cover Cialis. That’s because ED medications are often considered lifestyle-related rather than medically necessary. That said, more insurance policies are now covering medications used for ED and other sexual dysfunctions, so always check your policy to see if you’re eligible for Cialis coverage.
How to get cheap Cialis without insurance
Fortunately, there are still some ways to save on the otherwise expensive medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, even without insurance.
Here are some ways you can get cheap Cialis and discounts on other comparable ED medications:
1. Buy generic tadalafil
Your pharmacist may recommend the generic version of Cialis, tadalafil, to help reduce the cost per pill of your prescription. Since 2018, Cialis has been available as a generic, making for a more affordable option. Purchasing the generic rather than brand name version can save you a significant amount of money.
2. Use SingleCare coupons
Regardless of your insurance status, you can use SingleCare to save. The average retail price of brand-name Cialis can be more than $1,000. However, by opting for generic tadalafil and using a free SingleCare coupon, you can get 30, 5 mg tablets of tadalafil for only $90. That’s more than a thousand dollars saved with a simple click!
The difference between paying the full price cash amount for Cialis at the pharmacy or using a free SingleCare coupon can be up to a whopping 80%.
3. Check with the manufacturer
Often, drug manufacturers will offer savings programs and coupons to patients who need it. For example, you can save on 12 prescriptions of Viagra per year with this coupon from the manufacturer, Pfizer. However, many manufacturer coupons and rebates are limited to a specific timeframe or dollar amount, and some have strict eligibility requirements.
4. Buy Cialis online
Some people claim they can save significantly by purchasing their prescription medications online. Before you ever order medicine online, read this article to learn about the risks and know what to look for.
5. Compare costs with other ED pills
Cialis works similarly to other first-line PDE5i’s, but u nfortunately there is no standout cheap option, even when considering generics.
For example, the average cost of brand-name Viagra is about $150-$200 for a supply of two, 100 mg tablets, or under $50 with a SingleCare coupon.
Two, 20 mg tablets of Levitra , on the other hand, cost around $125, reduced to $80 with a SingleCare coupon.
Last but not least, you may consider Stendra . Not yet available as a generic drug, six, 200 mg tablets of Stendra have an average cost of close to $500. A SingleCare coupon can help reduce this price to closer to $400.
ED pill | Generic availability | Dosage | Average cost without insurance | Cost with SingleCare coupon |
Cialis (tadalafil) | Yes | 30, 5 mg tablets | $1,340+ | $90 |
Viagra (sildenafil) | Yes | 2, 100 mg tablets | $150-$200 | $50 |
Levitra (vardenafil) | Yes | 2, 20 mg tablets | $125 | $80 |
Stendra (avanafil) | No | 6, 200 mg tablets | $500 | $400 |
