Can you take Cialis in the morning, Viagra at night
Levitra (vardenafil) is available in 2.5, 5, 10, and 25 mg tablets for on-demand treatment.
Can I Combine ED Meds? When Viagra Doesn’t Work.
For the vast majority of men of men dealing with erectile dysfunction, drugs like Viagra and Cialis will help them successfully get an erection – over 80% of men with ED responded to these drugs during clinical trials. For others, ED meds may fail to help recover their virulence after certain surgeries and medical treatments, like a radical prostatectomy and cancer treatments that affect hormones.
That leaves a gap of men who don’t respond to the most popular and effective ED meds we have available. For these men, the future of sex can feel bleak. But there are options.
Viagra Doesn’t Work: Now What?
The most popular medications for ED are Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil), and they all work by the same mechanism of action. They’re phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, and while there are some nuances that make them all a little different, they all do the same thing: help blood flow in the penis by removing one of the brakes on that system.
Despite a success rate of over 80% in clinical studies twenty years ago when PDE5 inhibitors were approved, newer real-world data suggest as many as 30% of men who try these medications won’t get the erection they want or need. Part of this, according to the data, is age. The older you are, the less effective medications like sildenafil may be, with only about 60% of men over 75 years responding to sildenafil.
For men who’ve tried these PDE5 inhibitors with no success, the first step should be to talk to your doctor. Depending at what dose you began treatment, a higher dose is the likely first move.
Higher ED Med Doses
Viagra (sildenafil) is available in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg and taken in the hours before sex, called “on demand” treatment. Most men begin treatment at 25 or 50 mg, but if these lower doses aren’t working, their doctor may move them up to 100 mg.
Cialis (tadalafil) is available in 2.5, 5, 10, and 25 mg tablets and is also taken on-demand, though 2.5 and 5 mg tablets are also used as a once-daily treatment, called Cialis Daily. Most men will begin treatment with lower doses and move higher as necessary.
Levitra (vardenafil) is available in 2.5, 5, 10, and 25 mg tablets for on-demand treatment.
But if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already tried higher doses, to no avail, and you’re wondering what’s next.
ED Meds Besides Viagra and PED5 Inhibitors
A common next step, especially for men who may be dealing with ED due to a surgery like radical prostetectomy, is an injectable ED treatment. Yes, these are injected straight into the penis. But take heart! This is a tiny needle and you’ll have plenty of guidance from a trained physician.
Injectables can work really well by delivering medication directly to where it’s needed for blood flow. Two of these injectable medications are:
Tri-mix is a mix of three drugs: papaverine, phentolamine, and prostaglandin E-1 (PGE1). This cocktail is injected into the base of the penis and works within 20 minutes.
Cavaject (alprostidil) is another injectable that contains the PGE1 alprostidil. PGE1s cause the blood vessels in the penis to relax and dilate, allowing for healthy blood flow.
Both work quite well, but the hurdles to guys adopting these potent treatments is high: a needle in your penis isn’t exactly my idea of fun. Guys looking for other options often ask us about a combination of ED meds, sometimes even for recreational use.
Can I Combine ED Meds?
We sometimes get questions about combining ED medications for a more powerful erection. To begin: you should never combine ED meds on your own, for ED or recreationally, and none of these medications are approved by the FDA for use with one another.
The truth is that recreational use of Viagra “for better sex” has been shown NOT to work in research studies. In one study that looked at healthy young men who had used no medications in the prior 6 months and who were in a stable relationship for at least 3 months, researchers found that half of the men, who began taking sildenafil (Viagra), had no improvement in reported erection quality compared to the other half of guys who took a placebo.
If you’re hoping to put ED meds to use just for fun, think again. The use of ED meds without a doctor’s blessing can lead to unexpected health consequences, like a sudden drop in blood pressure, blurred vision, or worse if you’re taking other medications or have unaddressed health conditions.
New research has pointed to some evidence that a combination of PDE5 inhibitors may get certain men with health conditions over the hump. A 2020 publication in Journal of Men’s Health looked at men who had had a radical prostatectomy (RP) and were still dealing with erectile dysfunction despite treatment with tadalafil. The researchers found that combining daily tadalafil 5 mg with sildenafil 50 mg or udenafil 100 mg tablets on-demand helped about 40% of these particularly challenging patients achieve success. For these men, who often resort to all kinds of treatments for ED after surgery, a combination of the right PDE5 inhibitors could be a pharmacologic option that avoids using needles.
Another systematic review of oral combination therapies after PDE5 failure asserts no improvements when combining daily low-dose tadalafil (chronic treatment) with on-demand sildenafil in young men. The researchers indicate that the study was too small to be conclusive, but that it should be tested in older men.
Ultimately combining ED meds has been only somewhat tested by researchers, and we’d caution against doing anything like this without strict medical advice.
Your ED May Have Underlying Causes That Need Addressed
If you’ve tried ED medications with no success, it’s also important to consider what’s going on with your overall health. Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and more chronic conditions are known to cause and contribute to ED, mainly because of their impact on blood flow. Hormonal issues like low testosterone (Low T) can also affect your sexual desire. This is part of the reason it’s so important to talk to your doctor about your situation and underlying health before trying ED medications.

Cialis (generic name tadalafil; see Important Safety Information) and Viagra (generic name sildenafil; see Important Safety Information) are drugs for erectile dysfunction. They both belong to the same family of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. PDE5 inhibitors work by increasing blood flow to the penis during arousal leading to a harder erection (Smith-Harrison, 2016).

If prescribed, get ED treatment delivered discreetly directly to your door.
“In general, it’s not recommended to take both Cialis and Viagra within a 36 hour period, because that’s how long Cialis can stay in your system,” says Dr. Michael Reitano, an expert in sexual health and Physician in Residence at Roman. “They both work on the same mechanism […] there isn’t any support in the literature for going above the maximum dose.”
You and your healthcare provider might find an individual schedule that works for your personal needs. Viagra and Cialis both belong to the same family of drugs and combining them could increase your risk of side effects. In general, if you’ve taken a dose of Viagra for ED, it’s not recommended to take Cialis within 24 hours after that. Or, if you’re taking Cialis, you shouldn’t take Viagra within the next 36 hours, Dr. Reitano says.
Some common side effects of PDE5 inhibitors include (Smith-Harrison, 2016):
There might be some situations in which someone has both Cialis and Viagra in their medicine cabinet. “If you had a patient switching from one drug to the other drug, you would just give them a washout period,” says Dr. Reitano. “So there’s no reason why a person couldn’t be given two prescriptions over time and have two medications on hand, even if it’s just switching from one to the other.”
What are the main differences between Cialis and Viagra?
Cialis and Viagra are drugs called PDE5 inhibitors that work by increasing blood flow to the penis during arousal, leading to harder erections. PDE5 inhibitors don’t create erections on their own, but make it easier for you to get hard over the course of its action.
One of the main differences between Cialis and Viagra is the duration of action. Cialis can cover you for up to 36 hours, allowing for spontaneity in your sex life. There are two ways to take Cialis: either as-needed, at least 30 to 60 minutes prior to sexual activity or once a day at the same time every day without regard for the timing of sexual activity (Smith-Harrison, 2016).
What dosing schedule you prefer depends on your personal preferences, which you can discuss with your healthcare provider. If you don’t like taking medications every day, the as-needed Cialis may be more attractive. On the flip side, if you’d like more spontaneity without worrying about planning your sexual activity, the once-a-day way to take Cialis could be better for you. There’s only one way to take Viagra for erectile dysfunction: as needed around one hour prior to sexual activity.
Which is better for you: Viagra or Cialis?
“It depends on your lifestyle, sexual needs, side effect profile, how they last in your system, and how well they work,” says Dr. Reitano. “Let’s say a person has side effects with one—with the sildenafil—and it causes nasal stuffiness. They might say, well I’m only going to have a single sexual experience, I’d rather have a drug that covers me for 8 hours, even though it causes me this stuffiness and discomfort because I’m not going to need the effects of the drug beyond that.”
“This same person may be going away for the weekend and they don’t know when they’ll be having sex. They want the effects for 36 hours […] and they might say ‘I’d like to take Cialis for this 36 hour period, even if it causes some nasal congestion.’”
One study comparing Cialis and Viagra showed that the two drugs were equally effective in treating erectile dysfunction. However, men and their partners preferred Cialis over Viagra, citing less time pressure, reduced sense of urgency and less planning before and during sexual encounters (Gong, 2017). In the end, it’s up to you and your healthcare provider to decide what works best for you.
How long does Viagra last, and when does it start to work?
What if Cialis or Viagra isn’t working for me?
If you’re still experiencing erectile dysfunction after having tried Cialis or Viagra, there are other options.
Addressing underlying health conditions
Certain health conditions can impede your body’s ability to get an erection, even when taking drugs like Cialis. Common health conditions associated with erectile dysfunction include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression, low testosterone, and enlarged prostate. Improving these underlying conditions may help improve your overall sexual health (Rew, 2016).
Lifestyle changes
Cigarette smoking is associated with higher rates of erectile dysfunction (Kovac, 2015). Quitting smoking can help improve your sexual health. In addition, alcohol dependency was associated with more sexual dysfunction, including problems with desire, arousal, and erectile function (Pendharkar, 2016).
Other treatments for ED
Beyond PDE5 inhibitors, there are other treatment options for erectile dysfunction (Rew, 2016):
- Testosterone therapy for men with erectile dysfunction caused by low levels of testosterone, a condition called hypogonadism.
- Injectable medications like alprostadil directly stimulate the penis to get hard.
- Vacuum restriction devices placed over the penis can maintain erections up to 30 minutes.

Cialis and Viagra Together? Side Effects, Dosage and Risks
Posted February 10, 2020 by Michael Chamberlain – See Editorial Guidelines The terms “erectile dysfunction” and “impotence” aren’t new anymore, neither are they considered as taboo as they were in previous times. Millions of men suffering from these disorders have the inventors of Viagra and Cialis to thank. They are two of the most potent and widely used pills for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. But what happens when you take Cialis and Viagra together? Can you? Should you? Well, in this article, we’re going to explore the effects of combining Cialis and Viagra together! Here’s the quick answer, then read on for much more insight into these two drugs. Cialis and Viagra Together? Taking both Cialis and Viagra at the same time is not recommended by any Healthcare provider, due to the higher risk of priapism and duplication of medications. Before taking or changing any erectile dysfunction related drug, always consult your physician. A variety of other such drugs are also available on the market. Besides, more than often, men are just looking for novel ways to spice up their sex lives and make use of these sex enhancement drugs to do so. Quite a large number of men have already been convinced that these medications are effective and help them overcome their difficulties. Nonetheless, people always tend to struggle for perfection and keep wanting more. The same is the case with these sex enhancement drugs. Men wonder if combining Cialis and Viagra together would yield better results than a single pill. So, lets head into the more extensive answers on whether this combination will help you achieve your desired outcome, or is taking Viagra simultaneously with Cialis detrimental for your overall health.
Taking Cialis And Viagra Together
Some men prefer combining both medications to create the “ultimate perfect erection.” However, medically speaking, physicians strictly prohibit men from combining the two pills. If you happen to wonder why, then the following is a simple explanation. Men with impotence issues may be prescribed Viagra, and after a certain period, they shift towards Cialis. Some of them consider Viagra to be an ineffective pill for treating their condition and decide to boost their efficacy by means of adding Cialis. However, combing medications on your own is not a wise thing to do anyway, and it is best to consult your physician or healthcare practitioner. A doctor should be the one to carefully examine your condition and then adjust your dosage to an amount best suited for your condition. Self-medicating can have disastrous consequences. It has been reported that a combination of Cialis and Viagra together can be harmful to your health and may lead to priapism, a health condition feared by men throughout the globe. If such a condition is to occur, one must immediately consult a physician or visit the nearest healthcare facility. Both medications, Viagra and Cialis, are potent enough to treat erectile dysfunction on their own, and there’s no need to combine the two. If you fail to attain your desired results, then either you are not taking the right dosage of the medication, or you might have some underlying health condition that’s preventing the drug from working effectively. No matter what the case, talk to your physician, and under no circumstance whatsoever, adjust the dosage or combine these medications by yourself.
Significant Differences Between Cialis and Viagra
To help us understand why these two medications should not be combined, one should gain proper insight into the mechanism of action of both the pills. Both Cialis and Viagra have a similar effect. They increase the blood flow towards the sex organ, enabling men to maintain an erection. However, this doesn’t mean that there is absolutely no difference between them. The difference between the two is the time taken for both the drugs to reach their maximal effect. Viagra, or Sildenafil Citrate, was the first drug that was used in the field of impotence medication. When this medication was first made available in the market more than twenty years ago, a large number of men got a chance to bring back their sex life once again. This drug is also known amongst people as “the blue pill.” The pill is incompatible with wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages. The effect of this drug remains for an average of four to six hours. The duration varies from individual to individual depending upon an individual’s body chemistry. Viagra’s effect on the body is observed about an hour after its intake. If you consume Viagra after a proper meal, then you will have to wait a lot longer than this for the drug to start acting. The primary active ingredient of Cialis is Tadalafil. Often referred to as the “a weekend pill.” The reason being the long-lasting effect of this drug, which lasts for about 36 hours. Food intake has no significant impact on the absorption and bioavailability of Cialis.
Potential Adverse Effects of Combining Viagra and Cialis
No significant interactions were observed between Viagra and Cialis. However, this does not necessarily mean that there exist zero interactions between the two drugs. It’s always advisable to discuss your condition with a physician or a healthcare practitioner first.
Therapeutic Duplication
Therapeutic duplication is defined as the use of two or more drugs from the same drug family or therapeutic category to treat the same disorder. It’s intentional in cases where medications with similar mechanisms of action are used simultaneously for enhanced therapeutic benefit. It might even be unintentional in cases where a patient has been treated by multiple doctors or had their prescriptions filled at different pharmacies . Therapeutic duplication is known to have potentially disastrous outcomes. This is the reason why combining different sex enhancement medications is something one shouldn’t consider. Since Viagra and Cialis are both drugs that come under the same above-mentioned category, they are not recommended to be mixed together. If one medication doesn’t seem to show the desired effect, consult your physician. Based upon your medical history along with your current health condition, the doctor might adjust the drug dosage so that it works for you or prescribe an entirely different ED drug. Both Cialis and Viagra are PDE5 inhibitors used for the treating of erectile dysfunction and impotence issues. These drugs only work when a man is already sexually stimulated. The combination of these medications increases the likelihood of priapism since Cialis lasts in the body for about 36 hours and Viagra for about 4 to 5 hours.
Risk of Priapism
Priapism is a medical condition associated with an erection of the penis, which lasts way longer than the average duration. The persistent erection isn’t caused by sexual arousal and is often extremely painful. Even though priapism is an overall uncommon condition, it commonly occurs in people with preexisting health conditions such as those suffering from sickle cell anemia. Immediate treatment for priapism is typically required to prevent permanent tissue damage that might result in permanent inability to get or maintain an erection. In case of experience an erection that lasts for more than four hours, you need immediate intensive care. The emergency room physician will determine whether you suffer from ischemic or nonischemic priapism. This is necessary since the treatment for each type is different. The treatment for ischemic priapism needs to be carried out as quickly as possible. Cialis In The Morning, Viagra At Night: Is This A Good Idea To Take Cialis And Viagra Together?
UPGUYS > Blog > ED Treatment > Cialis in the Morning, Viagra at Night: Is This A Good Idea To Take Cialis And Viagra Together?
Written by the UPGUYS Editorial Team Published on February 14, 2022
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is indeed very common among men of all ages worldwide. In Canada alone, almost half of the men above the age of forty have experienced erectile dysfunction to some extent.
Knowing these rates and numbers though does not make the situation any less frustrating. This frustration is partly due to the cultural stigma that follows men with ED, and it’s partly because every person prefers stress-free sex, after all.
Imagine you are in the middle of a date night, and everything is going smoothly, but things are not working as you wish down there. It is embarrassing and stressful for any person.
To avoid all this, some might make a snap decision to double up the dose of their prescribed medication or pop up a different magic pill for better, expanded results.
At first, it might make sense, right? Viagra is one of the most well-known medications prescribed for ED. Cialis , too is tested, approved, and vastly prescribed by doctors for the same condition. So, why not take both?
Though it may seem improbable, combining the two, Viagra and Cialis, is a bad idea! Not only is it dangerous, but it also has no effect on getting you any harder!
Remember, if your medication is not working, you need to talk to your healthcare provider before deciding on changing the dosage or mixing the pills on your own.

In this article, we talk about the following:

Why the Weak Erection?
Let’s start with the basics; how does an erection happen in the first place? Penile erection occurs when blood rushes into the penis and when the muscles of the corpora cavernosa of the penis relax and let enough blood fill in the empty spaces.
The process that is explained above is a complex one. It involves the brain, nerves, blood vessels, hormones, emotions, and muscles. Any physical or emotional problem that interrupts or ruins the function of these organs and chemicals can cause problems that lead to ED.
The underlying issues causing ED include but are not limited to:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Multiple sclerosis
- Low testosterone
- Sleep disorders
- Medication interaction
- Prostate cancer or enlarged prostate
- Stress
- Depression
- Relationship problems
If you have problems in the bedroom, it is wise to contact your healthcare provider and share all the signs and symptoms with them. ED might be the cause of an underlying problem. Once you address the main issue, ED will go away as well. Remember that erectile dysfunction is not a disease but rather a symptom.
About 3 million Canadian men above the age of forty have experienced erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives.
How Do Cialis and Viagra Help with ED?
Cialis and Viagra are among the medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors . These inhibitors help dialect the blood vessels in the penis by blocking the breakdown of certain enzymes in your body.
- Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra)
- Tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis)
- Vardenafil (the active ingredient in Levitra)
- Avanafil (the active ingredient in Stendra)
Because of their effect on the blood flow, PDE5 inhibitors are also used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), acute decompensated heart failure, and many more . That’s why it is vital to talk to your healthcare provider before deciding to use them. These medications are only available with a prescription for the same safety reasons in Canada, the US, and some other countries.
The main difference between Cialis and Viagra is the amount of time they are in effect in our system. The effects of Viagra last for 4 to 8 hours . In comparison, Cialis is actively in our system for a day or a day and a half . They are both oral tablets, but Cialis also has a daily dosage available.
An erection involves the brain, nerves, blood vessels, hormones, emotions, and muscles. Any problem with these organs and chemicals might lead to ED.
Cialis and Viagra Together: Increased Risk, No Desired Result
Let’s put it upfront: The hardness will NOT double by taking two pills simultaneously or by taking Cialis in the morning and Viagra at night. This is NOT how these pills work.
The reason why is straightforward: They work the same way. Cialis and Viagra affect the same organs, send the same chemicals to the brain, and produce the same results. So, if it’s not working with taking one, it also won’t work with taking both.
But, that’s not all. These pills not only work the same way but also have the same side effects. And this is what makes taking Viagra and Cialis together dangerous and at times deadly.
For instance, they both drop the blood pressure. So, if taken simultaneously, the drop in blood pressure can be life-threatening.
Another danger of either doubling on the dosage or taking two different pills, like Cialis and Viagra, at the same time is priapism . Priapism is an erection that is painful and longer-lasting.
In the case of a sudden drop of blood pressure or priapism, seek immediate medical care.
This can’t be stated enough: Do NOT Cialis and Viagra simultaneously, and do NOT double up the dosage. Contact your doctor for help.
Seek immediate medical help in case any of the following side effects occur:
- Sudden chest pains during or after sex
- A prolonged erection (4 hours or more)
- Trouble seeing or hearing
- Skin reactions like hives
- Swelling in face or eyes
- Seizures
Remember that for PDE5 inhibitors, like Cialis and Viagra, to work, stimulation is necessary. You need to be sexually aroused since these pills do not work on their own.
Treatments for ED
There are many treatments available for ED in case the PDE5 inhibitors aren’t working. These are some of the treatments:
- Couple’s counselling
- Anxiety counselling
- Testosterone replacement therapy
- Penile implant
- Pumps
- Alprostadil urethral suppositories
- PRP
- Shockwave therapy
- Stem cell therapy for penile tissues
It is a misconception that taking Cialis in the morning and Viagra at night will increase their effectiveness. If your medication is not working, talk to your doctor.
The Healthier the Lifestyle, the Stronger the Erection
Apart from the available treatments for ED, you can always get a healthier erection with changes in your lifestyle. The following is how you can promote your health:
- Quit or reduce smoking
- Quit excessive drinking
- Get moving
- Eat healthily
- Get rid of tension and stress
- Stay sexually active
Online Services To Treat ED
Talking about ED might feel embarrassing to some men. Some might prefer not to bring up this issue with their family doctor or get the prescribed pills from the local pharmacy.
On the other hand, during Covid, some might feel unsafe to make extra trips for any reason and prefer to work remotely and do shopping online. The same goes for health issues. Many of us like to handle everything over the phone or on the internet unless we have to do otherwise.
These days, various online services address different issues or provide additional services. UPGUYS is a certified online pharmacy located in BC, Canada. It is specialized in men’s health. If you are concerned with your health and want to study your options to treat ED, you can start the process by filling out a basic questionnaire . Then, a Canadian doctor will be in touch with you and prescribe you the best treatment based on your health. You can ask about all the options available at UPGUYS and make an informed decision with the help of professionals.
UPGUYS delivers the prescribed medication to your preferred address discreetly and by mail.
Key Takeaways
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a symptom of an underlying issue, either physical or psychological. The good news is that ED is easily treated most of the time; most medications used to treat ED are FDA approved, highly popular, and with good records. But, mixing the pills, like Viagra and Cialis, and doubling up on the dosage after it didn’t work as you hoped is a terrible mistake.
It is a misconception that taking Cialis in the morning and Viagra at night will increase the effectiveness. If your medication is not working, talk to your doctor. NEVER take Viagra and Cialis together for better results. It is unsafe and can be a threat to your health.
